    We report the results of a 10-year, time-trend, case-control study in which serum cholesterol level was determined at several points in time preceding the diagnosis of colon cancer in a population of individuals who sought general checkups at an ambulatory care screening facility. Each of the 69 patients with colon cancer (32 men and 37 women) was matched with a control patient who was randomly selected.

    The CO2 laser was evaluated to determine its effectiveness for marginal cauterization of giant-cell tumors after resectional curettage. Average power densities of 11-53 W/cm2 for corresponding application times of 120 and 60 seconds were found to produce 30 degrees temperature rises in fresh human femoral heads. This temperature was adequate to achieve thermal necrosis of the tumor margins to a depth of 5 mm.

    Giant cell tumor is considered to be a lesion which behaves locally in an aggressive fashion and has a high local recurrence rate. Several physical adjuvant methods have been employed to reduce the local recurrence rate including cryosurgery with liquid nitrogen, phenol instillation, and the use of methylmethacrylate. In laboratory conditions, the authors applied a CO2 laser beam to eliminate traces of residual tumor tissue.
